Backpack Program

Feeding Those in Need

The Backpack Program was developed by an Ashburn elementary school mom to help provide meals to children that may not otherwise eat on the weekends. Many students, who depend on free and reduced meals provided by the school, often do not have food for the weekend. In response to this need, the Backpack program was developed to provide ongoing help to feed these children in our very own community.

Fitwize will collect, sort and pack items needed to send home with these children. We will do this on a weekly basis, during Fun Friday, so the kids can be directly involved and have a significant impact on the lives of these children. Almost all Ashburn elementary schools participate in this program, as well as a few middle and high schools.

If you would like to participate during the school year, please drop off any of the following items between mid-September through the end of May:

  • 2 juice boxes or milk boxes (horizon)
  • 2 breakfast items – oatmeal packets, granola bars, cereal bars
  • 2 lunch items – cans of Chef Boyardee, Easy Mac
  • 1 apple sauce
  • 1 fruit cup
  • 2 snack items – individual cookie/cracker packs, small bag chips
  • 1 granola bar
  • 1 whole apple or orange
  • Plastic grocery bags

Many items can be purchased in bulk at Costco, Sam’s Club or even Giant. For example, a box of 36 oatmeal packets will provide breakfast for 18 children and is much less expensive than purchasing a box of 12. All donated items can be placed in the large boxes in the lobby.

Thank you for your support in the Backpack Program and making a difference in the lives of our neighbors!
